Chapter 66 : Adopting the right means

Good companions lead to valuable gains, and good deeds lead to everything needed.	651
They should be desisted from forever: deeds not leading to the good and yielding fame.	652
They who seek greater heights should shun deeds that dent their reputation.	653
Even in distress, they won’t do deplorable deeds, those with unfaltering clarity and vision.	654
‘What have I done?’ – do not do deeds leading to such regret; even if you do, do not ever repeat them.	655

Even when you see your mother starving, don’t do deeds deplored by those, noble and respected.	656
Far better than ill-gotten wealth is the extreme poverty fallen on the noble and exemplary.	657
Though successful, they yield nothing but pain, when deplorable deeds are done rather than being shunned.	658
What is acquired with others’ tears, goes away with your tears; good deeds, even if begun with losses, will yield fruits later on.	659
Being content with ill-gotten wealth, is like storing water in a fresh unbaked mud pot.	660

துணைநலம் ஆக்கம் தரூஉம் வினைநலம் வேண்டிய எல்லாந் தரும்.	651
என்றும் ஒருவுதல் வேண்டும் புகழொடு நன்றி பயவா வினை.	652
ஓஒதல் வேண்டும் ஒளிமாழ்கும் செய்வினை ஆஅதும் என்னும் அவர்.	653
இடுக்கட் படினும் இளிவந்த செய்யார் நடுக்கற்ற காட்சி யவர்.	654
எற்றென் றிரங்குவ செய்யற்க செய்வானேல் மற்றன்ன செய்யாமை நன்று.	655
ஈன்றாள் பசிகாண்பாள் ஆயினும் செய்யற்க சான்றோர் பழிக்கும் வினை.	656
பழிமலைந் தெய்திய ஆக்கத்திற் சான்றோர் கழிநல் குரவே தலை.	657
கடிந்த கடிந்தொரார் செய்தார்க் கவைதாம் முடிந்தாலும் பீழை தரும்.	658
அழக்கொண்ட எல்லாம் அழப்போம் இழப்பினும் பிற்பயக்கும் நற்பா லவை.	659
சலத்தாற் பொருள்செய்தே மார்த்தல் பசுமட் கலத்துள்நீர் பெய்திரீஇ யற்று.	660

 

Chapter 65 : The might of the word

The benefits of a gifted tongue, outclass the benefits of anything else.	641
It creates and destructs; hence ensure there is never a blemish in your speech.	642
Speak with such quality that it binds those who lend their ears, and casts a spell on even those who don’t.	643
Speak such that the quality binds those who hear, and makes those who don’t hear yearn to hear.	643	V2
Speak with such quality that it binds those who queried, and casts a spell on even those who didn’t.	643	V3
Speak with such quality that it binds the erudite, and casts a spell on even the ignorant.	643	V4
Speak with such quality that it binds the friends who listen, and casts a spell on even the foes who don’t.	643	V5
Speak words that befit the capabilities; there is no greater virtue and wealth than that.	644
Speak words that befit your capabilities and those of the listener; there is no greater virtue and wealth than that.	644	V2
Say a word such that no other word can surpass that word.	645
Speaking alluring words, and seeking to learn when others speak, is the way of those with impeccable qualities.	646
If he is capable with words, tireless,and fearless; it is impossible to confront and defeat him.	647
If he speaks capably, flawlessly, and fearlessly, it is impossible to confront and defeat him.	647	V2
The world will instantly pay heed to those who can speak coherently and pleasingly.	648
Those who know not how to converse clearly and flawlessly in a few words, love to speak profusely.	649
Those who cannot convey, and make others comprehend, what they have learnt, are like a bunch of bloomed flowers that have no fragrance.	650

கேட்டார்ப் பிணிக்கும் தகையவாய்க் கேளாரும் வேட்ப மொழிவதாம் சொல்.	643
திறனறிந்து சொல்லுக சொல்லை அறனும் பொருளும் அதனினூங் கில்.	644
சொல்லுக சொல்லைப் பிறிதோர்சொல் அச்சொல்லை வெல்லுஞ்சொல் இன்மை அறிந்து.	645
வேட்பத்தாம் சொல்லிப் பிறர்சொற் பயன்கோடல் மாட்சியின் மாசற்றார் கோள்.	646
சொலல்வல்லன் சோர்விலன் அஞ்சான் அவனை இகல்வெல்லல் யார்க்கும் அரிது.	647
விரைந்து தொழில்கேட்கும் ஞாலம் நிரந்தினிது சொல்லுதல் வல்லார்ப் பெறின்.	648
பலசொல்லக் காமுறுவர் மன்றமா சற்ற சிலசொல்லல் தேற்றா தவர்.	649
இணரூழ்த்தும் நாறா மலரணையர் கற்ற துணர விரத்துரையா தார்.	650

 

Chapter 64: Being a minister

A minister is one who can envisage rare deeds, the resources and time entailed, and the means to execute.	631
Resolve, protecting the citizens, learning and perseverance – a minister is one who is capable in these too.	632
A minister is adept at these : splitting the foes, binding the allies, and uniting the estranged.	633
A minister should be proficient in assessing, executing and articulating unequivocally.	634
He knows righteousness; he can enunciate eruditely; he is always adroit at execution : he is an apt counsellor.	635
For one who has an impressive intellect, and is well-read, is there any task that can be extremely challenging?	636
Even if you know well how to do a task, do it knowing the nature of your world.	637
Even when the king stubs out the wise counsel, and knows not by himself, it is the duty of the minister to advise firmly.	638	V1
The king ought to listen to good counsel; even if he doesn’t know or listen, it is the duty of the minister to advise firmly.	638	V2
It is better to face 700 million foes than have a scheming minister.	639
They plan meticulously but yet can’t take it to completion, those who are poor at execution.	640

பிரித்தலும் பேணிக் கொளலும் பிரிந்தார்ப் பொருத்தாலும் வல்ல தமைச்சு.	633
தெரிதலும் தேர்ந்து செயலும் ஒருதலையாச் சொல்லலும் வல்ல தமைச்சு.	634
அறனறிந் தான்றமைந்த சொல்லானெஞ் ஞான்றும் திறனறிந்தான் தேர்ச்சித் துணை.	635
மதிநுட்பம் நூலோ டுடையார்க் கதிநுட்பம் யாவுள முன்னிற் பவை.	636
செயற்கை அறந்தக் கடைத்தும் உலகத் தியற்கை அறிந்து செயல்.	637
அறிகொன் றறியான் எனினும் உறுதி உழையிருந்தான் கூறல் கடன்.	638
பழுதெண்ணும் மந்திரியின் பக்கத்துள் தெவ்வோர் எழுபது கோடி யுறும்.	639
முறைப்படச் சூழ்ந்தும் முடிவிலவே செய்வர் திறப்பா டிலாஅ தவர்.	640

 

Chapter 63 : Unfazed in the face of trouble

Smile in times of trouble; it is without equal, in repeatedly trouncing trouble.	621
Floods of tribulation will be wiped away, when the wise set their minds on overcoming it.	622
They will torment the torment, those who don’t get tormented by torment.	623
Whenever stuck in a mire, if one chugs along like a bull, trouble will be distressed.	624
Even under an onslaught of adversities, if one is unfazed, his torments will be tormented.	625
Will they be distressed by poverty – those who, in times of wealth, don’t stingily cling to their wealth?	626
Knowing that the human body is ever a target for afflictions, the wise will not be distressed by distress.	627
He who yearns not for pleasures, dismisses adversities as inevitable, will never be distressed.	628
He who yearns not for pleasure in joyous times, will not be distressed in times of sorrow.	629
If one accepts adversities as pleasures, his adversaries too will acclaim him.	630

இடும்பைக்கு இடும்பை படுப்பர் இடும்பைக்கு இடும்பை படாஅ தவர்.	623
மடுத்தவாய் எல்லாம் பகடன்னான் உற்ற இடுக்கண் இடுர்ப்பா டுடைத்து.	624
அடுக்கி வரினும் அழிவிலான் உற்ற இடுக்கண் இடுக்கட் படும்.	625
அற்றேமென் றல்லற் படுபவோ பெற்றேமென் றோம்புதல் தேற்றா தவர்.	626
இலக்கம் உடம்பிடும்பைக் கென்று கலக்கத்தைக் கையாறாக் கொள்ளாதாம் மேல்.	627
இன்பம் விழையான் இடும்பை இயல்பென்பான் துன்பம் உறுதல் இலன்.	628
இன்பத்துள் இன்பம் விழையாதான் துன்பத்துள் துன்பம் உறுதல் இலன்.	629
இன்னாமை இன்பம் எனக்கொளின் ஆகும்தன் ஒன்னார் விழையும் சிறப்பு.	630

 

Chapter 62 : Perseverance

Shun not a task because it is tough; perseverance brings respect.	611
The world deserts those who desert an essential task; while executing, don’t wilt and let the task fail.	612
The greatness of benevolence rests on those who have the quality of perseverance.	613
Benevolence of the person without persistence, will turn futile like a sword in the hands of a coward.	614
Forsaking gratification, he who perseveres, is a pillar for one’s kin – wiping and bearing their woes.	615
Effort creates wealth; lack of it induces poverty.	616
Thus they speak : the angel of poverty resides with the sluggard; the lotus-residing angel of wealth rests on the efforts of the unsluggish.	617
Lack of good fortune brings not disgrace; not gaining requisite knowledge, and not persisting, is disgraceful.	618
Even if god has given up, perseverance will pay the wages for one’s efforts.	619
Even if ool or god doesn’t aid, perseverance will pay the wages for one’s efforts.	619	V2
They will defeat and see the back of ool (fate) – they who persevere resolutely without respite.	620

தாளாண்மை யில்லாதான் வேளாண்மை பேடிகை வாளாண்மை போலக் கெடும்.	614
இன்பம் விழையான் வினைவிழைவான் தன்கேளிர் துன்பம் துடைத்தூன்றுந் தூண்.	615
முயற்சி திருவினை யாக்கும் முயற்றின்மை இன்மை புகுத்தி விடும்.	616
மடியுளான் மாமுகடி என்ப மடியிலான் தாளுளாள் தாமரையி னாள்.	617
பொறியின்மை யார்க்கும் பழியன் றறிவறிந் தாள்வினை இன்மை பழி.	618
தெய்வத்தான் ஆகா தெனினும் முயற்சிதன் மெய்வருத்தக் கூலி தரும்.	619
ஊழையும் உப்பக்கம் காண்பர் உலைவின்றித் தாழா துஞற்று பவர்.	620
