Chapter 112: In praise of her charms

Bless you Anicham*,

You’re soft, no doubt!

More delicate

Than you, is she

Who I covet.

(*Anicham – a mythical flower so sensitive that it droops or withers if anyone even smells it.)

 

How you’re seduced, my heart,

When you see a flower.

Flowers seen by all,

You are mistaken,

Are not her eyes.

She of supple arms,

Tender-sprouts her body,

Pearly is her smile,

Heady is her smell,

Spear-like her smeared* eyes.

* Tamil women used to paint their eyebrows and eyelids with collyrium, a black eyeshadow.

 

Feeling it’s no match,

Lily would wilt down

And stare at the ground

If it sees the eyes of her

Who wears graceful jewels.

– Kural 1114

 

She has worn anicham flower

Without pinching out its stalk.

Her slender waist

May no more hear

Auspicious drums.

Which is the moon

And which the girl’s face,

Unable to discern,

The baffled stars have

Strayed from their course.

The glistening moon

That wanes and waxes

Is marred by vacant spaces.

Is there a single taint

On my maiden’s face?

Long live moon!

I shall love you too

If only

You can be radiant

As my girl’s face.

She has eyes like a broad flower.

Moon,

If you can resemble her face

You need not appear

For everyone to see.

Anicham flower

And annam’s* feather:

Under milady’s feet,

They are nothing but

Nerunji thorn fruit.

– Kural 1120

* Annam – a mythical species of swan, that can sift water and milk, and is used in poems as a metaphor or simile for gracious gait and gentle looks. Also, the vehicle of Lord Brahma.
* Nerunji – A common herb with thorny fruits (terrestris tribulis/ cow’s thorn/ caltrop/cat’s head)

அறுவாய் நிறைந்த அவிர்மதிக்குப் போல மறுவுண்டோ மாதர் முகத்து.	1117
மாதர் முகம்போல் ஒளிவிட வல்லையேல் காதலை வாழி மதி.	1118
மலரன்ன கண்ணாள் முகமொத்தி யாயின் பலர்காணத் தோன்றல் மதி.	1119
அனிச்சமும் அன்னத்தின் தூவியும் மாதர் அடிக்கு நெருஞ்சிப் பழம்.	1120
